The american bison is an animal that has long captured my imagination. About two years ago I was able to visit Custer State Park in the black hills of South Dakota for the annual buffalo roundup. It turned out to be one of the coldest days on record for the roundup, but it was amazing to see a herd of about 1,300 bison moving across the South Dakota plain. The bison are corralled where they are branded and culled. I was able to get close once the bison were in the corral. It always amazes me how large these animals really are.
