While birds have been in my work for some time, I recently made a subtle shift in my approach to representing them, by focusing in on them to create more of a portrait. In this case, I did a mini series of corvids (so far just ravens and crows) against a simple, unpainted panel background (the raw wood panel was sealed before painting). When it came time to giving these paintings titles, I decided that they needed names rather than titles, and felt that common names would not be sufficient. So I ended up looking at more old world names, like Old English/medieval sounding names as I thought that would fit the birds better.
